Questions, answered

How long is a session?

Sessions run 30 to 90 minutes, depending on what you book. Plan to arrive a few minutes early, and to sit up slowly at the end.

What is tuina?

Tuina is a Chinese hands-on tradition. The therapist presses, kneads, rolls and stretches with the hands, thumbs and forearms, at a steady rhythm. It is done on a table, with you covered by a sheet or towel.

How is tuina different from Swedish massage?

Swedish massage is long, gliding strokes with oil across larger areas. Tuina stays longer in one place, with firmer, more focused pressure and more pressing and rolling than gliding. Both are done with you draped, and both let you set the pressure.

What do I wear?

Whatever is comfortable on the way in. Undress only as far as you like. You are covered by a sheet or towel the whole time, and only the part being worked on is uncovered.

Am I covered the whole time?

Yes. Only the part being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again when we move on.

Can I stop, or decline a stretch?

Yes, at any time and for any reason. You can pause, change position, skip a stretch or end the session, and we stop right away.

How do I set the pressure?

Before we start we ask what pressure you like and any area to leave alone. Tuina can be firm, so tell us at any time to go lighter or firmer.

What happens at a first visit?

We talk for a few minutes about pressure and anything to leave alone, you settle onto the table under a sheet, and the session begins. The first visit page walks through it.

What if I am ill or pregnant?

Ask your doctor before you book, and tell us when you arrive. We do not diagnose, and we will move a session if you are unwell.

Is Mandarin spoken here?

Yes. Sheng speaks Mandarin and English, and you can book, talk through pressure and ask questions in either.
